  • 1 cup olive oil

  • 1½ cups fresh orange juice

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon

  • ½ tsp ground cloves

  • Zest of 1 orange

  • 3½ cups self-raising flour

  • Optional: ½ cup chopped walnuts

  • Optional: 2 tbsp sesame seeds

This Samian olive oil cake is a traditional vegan pie, made without animal products, often baked during periods of fasting or just for a wholesome sweet treat. It’s rich in extra virgin olive oil, scented with orange zest, cinnamon, and sometimes topped with sesame or walnuts. A no-fuss recipe from every Greek household — full of love and fragrance.


👨‍🍳 Instructions
  1. Mix the orange juice with the baking soda – it will fizz.

  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the olive oil, sugar, cinnamon, clove, and orange zest.

  3. Add the fizzing juice, then gradually mix in the flour until you get a thick, pourable batter.

  4. Optionally fold in the walnuts.

  5. Pour into a greased or parchment-lined baking dish, and sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired.

  6. Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 35–40 minutes, until golden and a knife comes out clean.

  7. Let cool, then cut into pieces.
