๐Ÿ“ 1. Geographic Location & Area

The Municipality of Western Samos covers the western half of the island, stretching from Karlovasi to the remote areas of Mount Kerkis and the islandโ€™s western coast. It includes:

  • The town of Karlovasi (administrative capital)

  • The villages of Marathokampos, Kastania, Kontakaiika, Skoureika, Koumaiika, Neochori, Pyrgos, Drakai, Kastraki, and many smaller settlements

  • Coastal areas such as Votsalakia, Ormos Marathokampou, and Agios Isidoros

The total area is approximately 194 square kilometers, featuring rich geography: mountains, gorges, rivers, and long coastlines.

๐Ÿงญ 2. Municipal Structure & Administration

The Municipality of Western Samos was established by Law 4600/2019, which split the former unified Municipality of Samos into two.

It consists of 2 municipal units:

  • Karlovasi Municipal Unit

  • Marathokampos Municipal Unit

The administrative seat is Karlovasi, which also serves as the commercial, educational, and economic hub of the western side.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ 3. Population & Settlements

According to the 2021 census, the municipality has about 9,400 residents, distributed as follows:

  • Around 5,000 people live in Karlovasi

  • The rest live across mountain and coastal villages, many with fewer than 100 permanent residents

Several settlements see seasonal population growth in the summer, with returning expatriates and visitors.

๐Ÿ”๏ธ 4. Natural Environment & Climate

The region is dominated by Mount Kerkis, the highest point of the island at 1,434 meters. Western Samos is known for its wild and majestic nature, combining rugged mountains with breathtaking coastlines.

Main features:

  • Dense pine and plane tree forests

  • Numerous streams and ravines

  • Caves, plateaus, and hiking trails

  • Pristine beaches such as Seitani, Potami, and Limnionas

The climate is Mediterranean, but often cooler and fresher than the eastern part of the island due to altitude and vegetation.

In Karlovasi operates a school of the University of the Aegean, offering programs in information science, economics, and management.

The presence of students gives the town a youthful and dynamic atmosphere, especially around the town center.
