📍 1. Geographic Location & Area
The Municipality of Western Samos covers the western half of the island, stretching from Karlovasi to the remote areas of Mount Kerkis and the island’s western coast. It includes:
The town of Karlovasi (administrative capital)
The villages of Marathokampos, Kastania, Kontakaiika, Skoureika, Koumaiika, Neochori, Pyrgos, Drakai, Kastraki, and many smaller settlements
Coastal areas such as Votsalakia, Ormos Marathokampou, and Agios Isidoros
The total area is approximately 194 square kilometers, featuring rich geography: mountains, gorges, rivers, and long coastlines.

The Municipality of Western Samos was established by Law 4600/2019, which split the former unified Municipality of Samos into two.
It consists of 2 municipal units:
Karlovasi Municipal Unit
Marathokampos Municipal Unit
The administrative seat is Karlovasi, which also serves as the commercial, educational, and economic hub of the western side.

According to the 2021 census, the municipality has about 9,400 residents, distributed as follows:
Around 5,000 people live in Karlovasi
The rest live across mountain and coastal villages, many with fewer than 100 permanent residents
