📍 Location

Palaio Karlovasi is the oldest district of Karlovasi, built on the hillside northwest of the town, overlooking the Aegean Sea. It retains the authentic character of the era when Karlovasi was the commercial and intellectual center of Western Samos.

🧭 Brief Description

The area is a living architectural treasure. Narrow cobbled streets, old stone houses with arches, abandoned mansions, and ruined factories tell the story of an era of economic prosperity.

Although no longer the liveliest part of the town, it is one of the most atmospheric—ideal for photography, walking, and cultural exploration.

Agia Triada – The gem of faith and stone

The church of Agia Triada dominates Palaio Karlovasi and is one of the most important religious landmarks of the area. Built in a prominent spot, among the old houses and narrow alleys, it attracts locals, pilgrims, and visitors, especially on its feast day.

📜 History

Agia Triada was likely built in the late 19th century, with architecture that blends traditional Samian elements and Byzantine structure.
Though not Byzantine itself, it preserves the dignity and reverence of older temples and is deeply connected with Karlovasi’s identity.

🙏 Religious Significance

The parish of Agia Triada was one of the main ones in Karlovasi for many decades. Today, it remains active and serves as a place of worship and social gathering.
Its annual celebration on Pentecost Sunday includes church services, processions, and a small festive gathering in the square.

📜 History & Tradition

Palaio Karlovasi was the first settlement in the area, with roots going back to the 17th century. Its growth skyrocketed in the 19th century when the region became a center for trade and winemaking.

A highlight is the imposing neoclassical building of the Old Karlovasi Gymnasium, a symbol of the town’s educational and cultural flourishing. Surrounding the area are old factories, warehouses, and buildings that once buzzed with life.
