Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour in Potami
๐ Transfiguration of the Savior โ A Sacred Retreat Overlooking the Aegean
๐ Location
The small chapel of the Transfiguration of the Savior is located in the Potami area, just outside Karlovasi. It is built on a hill with a breathtaking view of the Aegean Sea. You can reach it either from Potami beach or via the forest path leading to the waterfalls.
๐งญ Brief Description
This is a stone-built, single-aisle chapel with simple architecture, constructed in a truly awe-inspiring spot โ right on the edge of a cliff above the forest and the sea. The view, especially during sunrise or sunset, is magical.
The place combines spirituality, natural beauty, and serenity. It is a beloved destination for prayer, meditation, and photography.
๐ History & Tradition
The chapel is believed to have been built in the 11th century, during the Middle Byzantine period, on top of an older worship site. Its architectural style reflects Byzantine simplicity, with a characteristic arch and humble design. In earlier times, it was used by monks or hermits, as the location is remote and perfect for solitude and contemplation.
Traces of ancient frescoes have been found inside, and there have been occasional efforts for restoration and preservation.
The Feast of the Transfiguration (August 6) is still an important celebration for the local community, with a service that draws visitors from Karlovasi and surrounding villages.
