🛡️ The Polykratean Walls

The Polykratean Walls are among the most important defensive structures of antiquity in the Aegean. They were built to protect the powerful and flourishing ancient city of Samos – the site of today’s Pythagoreio. Constructed during the rule of the famous tyrant Polykrates (538–522 BC), the walls reflect the scale, strength, and engineering sophistication of the Samian city-state in the 6th century BC.

📍 Where Are the Polykratean Walls Located?

The walls surrounded the ancient city of Samos, which lies in the area of modern Pythagoreio, on the southeastern side of the island. The remaining sections are mainly located:

In the area west and northwest of Pythagoreio

Along the path leading to the Eupalinian Aqueduct

Above the Castle of Lykourgos Logothetis

Near the ancient harbor, with views of the open sea

🔎 These are not part of a single organized archaeological site but scattered remains throughout and around the town.

📚 Historical Context

Polykrates was one of the most imposing and enigmatic figures in ancient Greek history. As ruler of the island during a time of independence, naval dominance, and cultural prosperity, he initiated several colossal infrastructure projects: including the Eupalinian Aqueduct, the Heraion, and the defensive walls.

The walls were designed to enclose the entire city and protect it from external threats. While the design wasn’t entirely groundbreaking, their sheer scale and construction quality make them unique for their time.

🧱 Construction & Layout

The total length of the walls was approximately 6.5 km, with a thickness of up to 3 meters. Built from massive hewn stone blocks, the walls followed the natural terrain and enclosed:

The flat expanse of the ancient city

The area around the acropolis

Sections near the harbor and coastline

At key points, there were gates and towers. Their construction allowed visual contact with both the sea and the interior of the island, offering both defensive and communication advantages.

🏔️ What Remains Today

Unfortunately, only a few sections of the Polykratean Walls have survived. Still, they remain impressive due to:

The enormous size of the stone blocks

The precise construction and alignment

The panoramic views from the ancient acropolis

The aesthetic harmony with the landscape

Especially near the Castle of Lykourgos Logothetis and along the path to the Eupalinian Aqueduct, visitors can spot well-preserved stone sections.
