Vathy is the capital and administrative center of Samos, built amphitheatrically around a natural bay on the northeastern side of the island. The town stretches from the waterfront up the surrounding hillsides, creating a landscape where neoclassical buildings, narrow streets, and modern shops coexist within a compact area.

The town developed significantly during the 19th century, a period of economic growth for Samos, which is still reflected in its architecture, public buildings, and historic churches. The harbor played a key role in trade and communication with the Asia Minor coast, shaping Vathy into an important commercial center.

Today, Vathy is the heart of daily life on the island, hosting public services, schools, hospitals, shops, cafés, tavernas, and cultural venues such as museums and theaters. The seafront promenade is ideal for evening walks, offering views of the harbor and traditional fishing boats.

Despite its urban character, Vathy remains closely connected to nature, with hiking paths starting just outside the town and leading to pine-covered hills and panoramic viewpoints over the Aegean Sea. This combination of city life and natural surroundings makes Vathy a convenient and attractive base for exploring northeastern and northern Samos.

🕰️ Historical Background

The town was built in the mid-18th century as the port of Vathy. It was initially called Kato Vathy, Gialos, or Port of Vathy, to distinguish it from the settlement of Ano Vathy on the hillside behind the harbor.

The town:

Developed significantly with the establishment of the Principality of Samos (1834)

Was named Stefanoupoli from 1834 to 1849, in honor of the first Prince, Stefanos Vogoridis

Returned to its original name after the removal of Vogoridis

Experienced population growth and construction of public buildings in the second half of the 19th century

⚔️ Modern History

In 1912, with the union of Samos with Greece, the town became the seat of the Prefecture of Samos.

During World War II, it served as the headquarters of the Italian occupation forces.

In November 1943, it was bombed by the Luftwaffe, causing severe destruction.

In 1958, it officially received the name Samos, replacing the name “Port of Vathy”.

🚢 Transport & Port

The Port of Samos (formerly known as Port of Vathy of Samos) is located in the northern inner part of the large natural Bay of Vathy, where today’s capital of the island is built. This bay is considered one of the safest natural harbors in Greece’s border island regions, especially in the eastern Aegean.

⚒️ Historical Development of the Port

Construction of the port began after the Greek War of Independence of 1821, and especially during the period of the Principality of Samos (1830–1912), when the town was established as the capital of the semi-autonomous state.

The first port works began in 1879–1880.

The following were created:

A 30-meter breakwater

A quay of approximately 320 meters

Extensive land reclamation on the eastern part of the bay to create a continuous waterfront, as the area previously consisted of small coves

Since then, the port has been gradually improved, with major works in the 1980s, which included:

Extension of the breakwater

Widening of the quay

Construction of a two-lane coastal road

Creation of parking zones

⚓ Modern Port Structure

Today, for commercial, tourist, and economic reasons, a second port has been built on the western side of the bay, which functions as the commercial harbor and is in full operation.

➡️ The old port is maintained as the tourist harbor, focusing on passenger and leisure use.

🛳️ Ferry Connections

The town of Samos is connected by ferry with Piraeus, with ships on this route often also calling at Karlovasi, on the western side of the island.

There are also:

🌊 Limited connections with other islands of the eastern Aegean

🛥️ A tourist route to Kuşadası (Turkey), located very close to the island

🛫 Air Access

The town is served by Samos State Airport, which is located approximately 15 km south of the town.
