🗣️ Name Origin & Historical Etymology

According to the renowned historian from Samos, Epameinondas Stamatiadis, the name “Karlovasi” derives from the Turkish words "Karli ovasi", meaning “snowy plain.”

Although this interpretation is considered the most widely accepted, it is not entirely convincing, as the area rarely experiences snowfall.

Historian Evangelia Balta offers an alternative view: the name might be connected to a river that once ran through the region, called Karklik Ovasi, which possibly evolved into the present-day Karlovasi.

🕰️ History of Karlovasi

📜 From "Neochorion" to Present-Day Karlovasi

Karlovasi was formerly known as "Neochorion" and was built around 1550 by Samian settlers during the repopulation period of Samos.
The first homes were constructed in the area of Alonaki, over the ruins of the ancient city of Gorgyra.

🧴 Industrial Heritage

Tanneries played a significant role in the town's history. Animal hides were processed here, mainly to produce sole leather.
Today, only the ruins of these buildings remain, serving as attractions for the island’s visitors.

🏥 The Leprosarium

Near the Fourniotiko Stream, lie the ruins of the leprosarium, established in 1887 in the area of Panagitsa Karlovasi and completed in 1890 due to a high number of cases.
In 1966, it was officially closed, and around 10 remaining patients were transferred to the "Agia Varvara" Infectious Disease Hospital in Athens.

🏛️ Karlovasi during the Principality

During the era of the Samos Principality, Karlovasi emerged as a major industrial, commercial, and intellectual center of the Aegean.
