Holy Monastery of Prophet Elias, Samos
๐๏ธ Prophet Elijah Monastery of Samos
๐ฐ๏ธ Historical Background
The Holy Monastery of Prophet Elijah in Samos is one of the islandโs most important religious and historical monuments.
It is located at an altitude of approximately 210 meters, three kilometers southeast of Karlovasi, offering panoramic views of the surrounding area.
The monastery was founded in 1625 by two monks, Neophytos and Gregory, who had come from Nea Moni of Chios.
Previously, Nikolaos Iakovou, a resident of Karlovasi, had built a chapel at the site in honor of the Prophet Elijah.
He later became a monk under the name Nikodimos in Chios and donated the chapel to the two monks, who then demolished it and built a larger, more resilient church โ laying the foundation for the monastery we see today.
๐๏ธ Architecture & Artistic Features
The katholikon (main church), built in 1739, is a single-aisled basilica with a dome.
Its wooden iconostasis is a remarkable piece of ecclesiastical woodcarving, crafted by Yakoumis and his assistants Konstantinos and Manouil, all from Chios.
The portable icons on the iconostasis are particularly notable, including those of Christ, the Virgin Mary, St. John the Baptist, and the Prophet Elijah.
The icon of Prophet Elijah is especially significant โ it is silver-plated and dated to the year 1804.
On the church floor lies a marble slab featuring engravings of the double-headed eagle, the first humans (Adam & Eve), and a skull-and-crossbones motif.
๐ง Spiritual Life & Pilgrimage
Although currently inhabited by only one monk, the monastery remains active and is a place of prayer, reflection, and peace.
Visitors are welcome year-round, provided they dress respectfully.
The monastery celebrates its feast day on July 20, honoring Prophet Elijah, attracting pilgrims from across the island.
