⚓ Ormos Marathokampou – From Historic Port to Coastal Destination
🗺️ Location & Geographic Information

Ormos Marathokampou is a coastal settlement on the southwestern side of Samos, serving as the port of the mountain village Marathokampos. It lies about 4.5 km from Marathokampos, 16.5 km from Karlovasi, and 46 km from Samos Town. The elevation is 10 meters, and according to the 2011 census, it had a population of 210 residents.

🏛️ Historical Significance

From the 18th century to the late 19th century, the port of Ormos Marathokampou was the main maritime hub for southwest Samos. Passengers and goods were transported through here to other islands of the southeastern Aegean. The area once housed a harbormaster's office, customs house, quarantine station, around 50 warehouses, and several shipyards (tarsanás) for wooden boats.

🏖️ Beach & Port

The beach at Ormos is small—approximately 85 meters long—with pebbles and patches of sand. It’s located at the eastern edge of the settlement, next to the small harbor pier. The waters are clean and calm with a gently sloping seabed. The area is surrounded by cafés and tavernas, offering basic amenities to visitors.

🛠️ Economy & Infrastructure

The local economy is based on tourism, fishing, and agriculture. The village includes hotels, apartments, restaurants, cafés, and minimarkets, serving both locals and tourists. There is a bus stop nearby as well as a taxi stand, and basic infrastructure is available year-round.

⛪ Church of Saint Nicholas

The parish church of the settlement is dedicated to Saint Nicholas. The original chapel was built in 1772 as a dependency of the Koutloumousiou Monastery of Mount Athos. After years of abandonment, the current church was built in 1962, and it now serves the religious needs of the local population.

🎭 Cultural Events

Ormos hosts several annual events, such as the Wine Festival in August and the Yalos (Seaside) Festival in July. Traditional customs are revived during local celebrations like Klidonas in June and Clean Monday (Kathara Deftera) in early spring.
