๐Ÿ˜๏ธ Lekka โ€“ The Hillside Village of History and Tradition

Lekka, built amphitheatrically on the hills above Karlovasi, is one of the oldest and most authentic communities of Samos. Just 4 kilometers from Karlovasi town, it offers panoramic views of the northern Aegean and the Ikarian Sea, in a setting that still moves to the rhythm of old island life.

๐Ÿงฑ Architecture & Atmosphere

The traditional core of the village has remained untouched by time. Old stone houses with tiled roofs, narrow alleys, arches, and flower-filled courtyards create a setting that feels like stepping back in time. Lekka isnโ€™t just a place to visit โ€“ itโ€™s a place to feel.

โ›ช Church of Saint John the Forerunner

At the highest point of the village stands the Church of Saint John the Forerunner, dedicated to the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist. The church was founded in 1845 and completed in 1863, featuring a stunning marble bell tower โ€“ one of the finest on the island.

Its architectural style follows the basilica type, with three naves and no dome. Inside, youโ€™ll find a magnificent marble iconostasis, crafted in Smyrna in 1914 by sculptor Nikolaos Perakis from Tinos. A rare relic is also preserved here: a fragment of the Saintโ€™s Holy Head, brought from the Holy Lands.

๐Ÿ‡ Nature, Rural Life & Local Products

Lekka is a rural village surrounded by olive groves, vineyards, and orchards. Locals produce their own wine, olive oil, and traditional spoon sweets. If you're lucky, a friendly villager might offer you a glass of homemade wine or a Greek coffee in the shade of the square.

๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ Walking Trails & Scenic Views

From Lekka, several paths lead into the slopes of Mount Karvounis (Ampelos), as well as to peaceful countryside walks through forests and vineyards. The view over the Aegean, especially in the afternoon, is breathtaking.

๐Ÿ“ Getting There

The road from Karlovasi takes less than 10 minutes by car. Itโ€™s fully paved and winds through green landscapes and vineyards. There is parking available near the entrance of the village.
