Koumeika Village in Samos – Traditional Settlement with Aegean Views
🏞️ Koumeika of Samos
An authentic village in the south, between mountains and the sea
📍 Location
Koumeika is located on the southwestern side of Samos, about 4 km from the sea and 39 km from the island’s capital, Vathy. Built amphitheatrically on a low hill at an altitude of around 200 meters, it offers southern views and easy access to both the interior and the coastal areas of the island.
🏛️ Administration
The village belongs to the Municipality of West Samos and forms a local community together with the nearby settlement of Mavratzaioi.
🕰️ History & Tradition
The village is believed to have been founded in the late 16th or early 17th century, during the period of Samos' repopulation with settlers from Asia Minor and the Dodecanese. Agriculture was the main occupation, especially the cultivation of olive trees, vineyards, and grains, while animal husbandry also played a major role.
📚 Koumeika was known for its vibrant social life and strong interest in education and politics — with the village square and cafés being central to public discussions and gatherings.
🌿 The Village Today
Despite the challenges of urban migration, Koumeika remains an active village, with a permanent population, school, cultural association, and restored traditional houses. The village square, shaded by a large plane tree, is the heart of daily life. Traditional cafés, narrow alleys, and stone-built homes keep the character of the village alive.
