๐Ÿž๏ธ Kontaiika Village โ€“ A mountain soul in southern Samos

๐Ÿž๏ธ A village embraced by the mountains, rooted in tradition

Kontaiika is located on the southwestern side of Samos, about 3 km from Marathokampos and roughly 40 km from the islandโ€™s capital, Vathy. Built at an altitude of around 260 meters, the village rests on the lower slopes of Mount Kerkis, offering cool summer breezes and panoramic views over the valley and the sea.

Administratively, it belongs to the Municipality of West Samos and is one of the liveliest traditional mountain settlements, preserving local architecture and strong community bonds.

๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ A Glimpse into History

The history of the village dates back to the post-repopulation period of Samos (17th century), when settlers arrived from Asia Minor. Kontaiika gradually became an agricultural center, focused on olive cultivation, vineyards, and livestock.

In the early 20th century, the village flourished. Many locals migrated temporarily to Egypt and the United States, sending back resources that were invested in building large stone houses with neoclassical details, many of which still stand proudly today.

๐ŸŒฟ The Village Today

Although the permanent population has declined, Kontaiika remains active and lively during summer, when expatriates return and cultural events take place in the village square.

The architecture is preserved, with stone houses and narrow, shaded alleys. At the center stands the Church of Saint Nicholas, with its bell tower echoing across the valley. Traditional cafรฉs and small taverns add to the warm local atmosphere.

๐Ÿฅพ Exploration & Nature

Several hiking paths start from Kontaiika, leading towards Mount Kerkis and the Marathokampos area โ€” a dream for nature lovers and quiet walkers. The surrounding landscape features olive groves, natural springs, and small chapels.

๐Ÿ“ธ Donโ€™t miss the view from the upper edges of the village, especially at golden hour.
