๐Ÿ–๏ธ A village with mountain roots and a heart by the sea

Kokkari is one of the most popular and beloved seaside villages of Samos. Located on the north side of the island, just 10 kilometers west of the capital (Samos Town), it stretches harmoniously between lush green slopes and a quaint natural harbor.

Today, Kokkari has grown into an internationally known tourist destination, without losing its traditional identity. Tiled-roof houses, cobbled alleys, tavernas serving Samian wine and local dishes โ€” all create an authentic Aegean experience.

๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ A Glimpse of History

The original village of Kokkari was built higher on the mountain to escape the pirate raids that plagued the Aegean during Byzantine and Ottoman times. The name possibly derives from the cultivation of kokkari (a type of onion) or an old local toponym.

As sea threats declined, residents moved closer to the coast, and the current seaside settlement began to grow during the early 20th century. Its small harbor became an important trade hub โ€” especially for exporting raisins, wine, and olive oil.

๐ŸŒŠ Nature, Sea & Activities

Kokkari is surrounded by three of the islandโ€™s most iconic beaches:

๐Ÿ๏ธ Lemonakia Beach โ€“ a hidden gem with turquoise waters

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Tsamadou Beach โ€“ organized and vibrant, ideal for sunbathing

๐ŸŒŠ Tsardakas Beach โ€“ a quieter option, favored by locals

Thanks to its strong northern winds, Kokkari is also one of the top windsurfing and kitesurfing spots in the entire Aegean. Many visitors come here specifically for water sports โ€” or simply to enjoy the view with a cocktail in hand.

๐Ÿ“ธ The Visitorโ€™s Experience

Kokkari is the kind of place that wins you over from the first walk. A sunset above the seafront cafรฉs, the scent of ouzo mixed with thyme and sea breeze, a table by a boat with freshly grilled octopus โ€” these are images that stay with you.

๐Ÿ‘ฃ For nature lovers, hiking trails lead to the old mountain village or even up to the Byzantine Vronda Monastery through lush terrain.
