🌄 Drakai Village – Where the Road Ends and the Magic Begins

Drakai is a small but historic village in western Samos, part of the Municipality of Western Samos in the Regional Unit of Samos. According to the 2011 census, the village had 97 residents, while recent estimates suggest about 75 permanent inhabitants today.

Built at an altitude of approximately 295 meters, the village lies amidst dense pine forests on the western slopes of Mount Kerkis. It is the westernmost and highest inhabited village on the island.

Drakai is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful villages of Samos. Surrounded by lush pine forests and perched above the sea, it offers a sense of peace, timelessness, and untouched natural charm.

Life in Drakai flows slowly and genuinely. The locals engage in:

In the 19th century, the villagers also raised silkworms and cultivated carobs. The village has a single traditional café, which serves as the main social hub. Most residents are elderly, but they hold onto their land, traditions, and way of life with admirable persistence.

🏖️ The Path to Paradise

A dirt road and hiking trails from the village lead to two of Samos’ most secluded beaches:

• 🐚 Megalo Seitani (Big Seitani)

• 🌊 Mikro Seitani (Small Seitani)

Both beaches are protected areas of outstanding natural beauty, located within the Mount Kerkis National Park. They are known as breeding grounds for the endangered Mediterranean monk seal Monachus monachus, and access is only on foot – a true escape from mass tourism.

⚓ Agios Isidoros & the Last “Tarsanas”

Within Drakai's jurisdiction lies the tiny seaside settlement of Agios Isidoros, home to a handful of residents and the last remaining traditional boatyard (Tarsanas) on the island.

This is where Samos’ famed wooden boats and “Samainae” were once built – vessels that carried local wine across the Aegean. The famous “Golden Samaina” wine variety takes its name from these ships.

The Tarsanas of Agios Isidoros is a place of immense cultural and historical significance, a living monument to the island's seafaring past.

🌅 Sunset Worth Remembering

Drakai offers one of the most breathtaking sunsets in Samos. From the village, you can see the islands of Ikaria, Fournoi, and even Chios on a clear day. The sunset paints the sky in fiery hues and merges with the endless blue of the Aegean – a moment of pure magic that stays with you forever.
