📍 Location & Access

Ampelos is a traditional mountain village in the north-central part of Samos, built at an altitude of approximately 290 meters, on the green slopes of Mount Ampelos (also known as Karvounis). Until 1957, it was known by its older name: Nenedes.

It is accessed by a 4-kilometer provincial road that connects it to the main Vathy–Karlovasi highway, near Agios Konstantinos.

👥 Population & Historical Evolution

As of the 2011 census, Ampelos had 252 permanent residents. However, the demographic story of the village is notable:

• 1971: 404 residents

• 2011: 252 residents

The sharp population decline during the 1960s was mainly due to emigration, but local life and community spirit endure.

🕰️ Historical Notes & Name Origins

The oldest recorded reference to the name Nenedes comes from a 1774 property donation, describing a house near "Saint John" (Agios Ioannis).

In 1851, under the Principality of Samos, Nenedes was part of the Municipality of the Six Neighborhoods together with:

• Agios Konstantinos

• Manolates

• Stavrinides

• Valeontades

• Margarites

In 1900, it became an independent municipality, and in 1957, it was officially renamed Ampelos, reflecting the village’s long-standing connection with vine cultivation.
